10 Essential Tasks to Prepare Your Home for Fall Weather

Fall’s cooler temperatures are a reminder that winter is not far behind. Instead of waiting for heavy rain or snow to reveal problems around your property, take time now to inspect, clean, and protect your home. These ten practical tasks can help prevent small concerns from turning into costly repairs.

1. Inspect the Roof and Window Seals

Check your roof and window seals for possible leaks. Stains along your home’s eaves may indicate water intrusion. If you notice staining or damage, contact a roofing contractor and arrange for repairs before winter arrives.

2. Make Sure Water Drains Away From Your Home

Check that rainwater and melting snow can drain safely away from the house. Keep the gutters clear to prevent water from backing up. In areas that receive snow, clogged gutters may contribute to ice dams and water damage.

3. Shut Off Outdoor Water Connections

Before freezing weather begins, shut off exterior faucets and garden-hose connections. Drain the hoses completely and store them in the garage or another protected location.

4. Clear Overgrown Vegetation and Dead Branches

Remove overgrown vegetation around your property and trim dead tree branches near the house. Taking care of these areas before winter can help keep the exterior of your home clear and prepared for changing weather.

5. Give Your Lawn Its Final Seasonal Care

Mow the lawn one last time before cleaning and storing your lawn mower. You can also apply fertilizer and a pre-emergent treatment to help protect the lawn during winter and prevent weeds from germinating underground.

6. Clean and Protect Outdoor Equipment

Clean your grill and firepit before covering or storing them. Outdoor furniture should also be covered or moved into storage to protect it from the elements and windstorms, helping it remain in good condition for next year.

7. Service Your Heating and Cooling System

If you have an HVAC service contract, schedule a seasonal maintenance visit. Otherwise, replace the system’s filters and install covers over the outdoor air-conditioning condensing units.

8. Have the Fireplace and Chimney Inspected

Call a professional to inspect and clean your fireplace and chimney, especially if you plan to use them during winter. A flue that has not been properly cleaned could cause smoke to enter your home. If you use a wood-burning fireplace, place the ashes in a fireproof metal bucket and dispose of them properly.

9. Test Your Winter and Outdoor Equipment

Make sure the equipment you may need during winter is working correctly. If your area receives snow, test your snowblower and have it serviced if necessary. Check your outdoor motion-activated lights and security-system components as well.

10. Repair Cracks in Driveways and Walkways

Inspect your driveway, walkways, and steps for cracks. Water can enter these openings, freeze, and expand, turning small cracks into much larger ones. Completing repairs before winter can help prevent the damage from getting worse.

Preparing your home for fall does not have to feel overwhelming. By completing these tasks before severe weather arrives, you can protect your property, keep important equipment working, and enter the winter season with greater peace of mind.
